Lidija was born in Sremska
Mitrovica in Vojvodina (northern province of Yugoslavia). It is one of
the oldest European towns and stretches over the remains of the
antique Sirmium. Rich in culture, museums, dreamy windmills, galloping
horses, beautiful monasteries, and architecture; are all reasons why
art become an intricate part of Lidija's' life.
As a child she enjoyed
visiting Orthodox monasteries where they taught her to appreciate fine
art as she gazed at the Fresco paintings that marked the walls.
Everything that Lidija could see, touch and smell, brought back early
memories and still inspire her in the making of a piece.
Lidija's family later moved to
the capital, Belgrade (White town) where her father was playing in an
orchestra. A musician and an artist, Lidija's father always exhibited
his paintings in museums and galleries. There she started taking her
first art classes. Lidija was about seven years old when she finished
her first oil painting, using oil paints that she stole from her
father. Her father got very upset about it, but after seeing her
painting he decided to get her a set of her own paints.
At the age of 15, Lidija took
courses in leather accessory design. That’s when Lidija started sewing
and getting interested in leather, fabrics and the possibilities they
presented. In next few years Lidija enjoyed designing evening bags and
other accessories.
Lidija continued to take many
art classes and developed a special love for ceramic sculpture. She
went to Manakova kuca and took ceramic sculpture classes where she had
a exhibition show in 1993. Lidija has won many art awards and has been
published in many magazines and books.
About Lidija's family…
Lidija met her American
husband Adam in England, married in Yugoslavia, and went on their
honeymoon in Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Lidija and Adam are happy
to say that their two boys, and families, play a major roll in their
lives today. Achieving a perfect balance between things that seem to
be contradictions can be difficult but is definitely possible. Just
like achieving perfect balance between family vs. self (Art) and art
vs. practicality.
